There is a new choice for yogis who desire a mat that will support their practice in the most sustainable and traditional way. Yogasana has 7 yoga mats that are hand-made of 100% natural cotton. Each mat is 24″ x 72″ (4″ longer than the standard). They are reversible, cold water washable and guaranteed for 15 years. Yogasana has been making hand-loomed rugs in India for over 15 years. We used our expertise with cotton to make a mat dedicated to the practice of yoga.
Unlike the ubiquitous ‘sticky mats,’ Yogasana mats are woven by weavers in the region of India where yoga had its origin. Cotton is the traditional material for a yoga mat because the genesis of the practice predates the advent of plastic. Each mat takes 3 days to weave and 10 days total production time. The pride of craftsmanship is reflected by the signature of the master weaver on each Yogasana mat creating a connection between the weaver and the yogi.
Cotton is more durable than rubber. Users who may suffer from allergies are more receptive to a cotton surface. It’s more eco-sustainable than other non-PVC materials like TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) and PER (polymer environmental resin) and does not deteriorate in direct sunlight. Cotton provides a superior grip. With a rubber mat, the more you sweat, the more you slip. With a cotton mat, the more you sweat, the more you stick.
The mats come in 7 colors. 5 named after the elements: Earth – Water – Fire – Air – Ether. Plus 2 additional colors: Spring and Saffron After a lifetime of service to the yogi…the mat becomes a beautiful hall runner…never ending up in a landfill.
Yogasana is a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, an industry organization dedicated to promoting sustainable manufacturing practices. Part of the proceeds from the sale of every Yogasana mat goes to support the education of the children of the production workers.
Hand-woven in India – the birthplace of yoga. Each mat take 10 days to make including 3 days on a loom with a master weaver. The signature of the weaver is included with each mat. This creates a connection from weaver to yogi.
Our mats are cold-water washable and easy to clean and maintain. Always line dry.
